Do you want to…?

  • Eat healthier, with a focus on more wholesome foods?
  • Have accountability to exercise more consistently?
  • Remember to include God in your healthy lifestyle pursuit?
  • Identify the essentials in your life, and eliminate the rest?
  • Be more intentional, taking steps to reach your goals, and “level up” your life?

I, personally, have needed to get myself healthier for quite some time, now. And, I am tired of putting it off. So, I plan to put into practice what I’ve learned in order to finally get myself to the point where I can live the abundant life I know is possible … And, that life is available not just for me, but for ALL of us!

Each month, I will be posting an update on my progress. I will be completely honest about how I’ve done in the past month, and I invite you to comment on these posts, to join me in this challenge! Share your own progress each week, and we’ll hold each other accountable!

So, my own plan is to work on the following areas of my life, in order to simplify, and live more intentionally:

  • Eating healthier, with a focus on more wholesome foods & less processed foods, plus eating intuitively at each meal
  • Exercise consistently (at least 3 times per week, for a minimum of 20 minutes each day),choosing what’s “fun” & enjoyable for me
  • Include God in my healthy lifestyle pursuit through prayer, surrender to the Spirit, and daily (M-F) personal Bible study
  • Identifying the essentials in my life, and eliminating the rest (getting rid of everything in my home & lifestyle that isn’t “essential” to where I want to go in life)
  • Intentionally working on each of my goals, in order to “level up” my life — going from mediocrity to an abundant & fulfilling life.
  • Release 65 pounds in order to be more energetic, and be able to enjoy life more

With every goal, I believe it’s important to first identify WHY you want to make the changes. This “why” serves as your motivation for the days when it’s hard to continue, and you feel like quitting. Your “why” –according to Kim Dolan Leto— should fall into one of 3 categories: Relational, Medical, or Spiritual … in order for it to be “lasting”, not fleeting.

My own “Why”, then is inspired, in part, by the Bible verse, John 10:10, which says:

“The thief {the devil} comes only to kill, to steal, and to destroy. But, I {Jesus} have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”

I’m tired of letting the devil steal my chance at an abundant and fulfilling life! I’m tired of letting him attempt to destroy my future by keeping me stuck in my faulty mindsets and my overweight body! No more. Enough is enough!

So then, the rest of my “why” includes the fact that I want to have the energy & ability to do whatever it is God has for me… to fulfill the calling He’s given me. I cannot be effective for God’s kingdom if I’m overweight, unhealthy, and have zero energy to muster up the motivation to get ‘er done.

I’ve been overweight for 18 years now. And, I’ve tried countless methods and programs to attempt to get healthy. The only thing that worked for me — for a time — was Intuitive Eating, via the Thin Within program offered by Judy & Arthur Halliday. Using the principles of “hunger & fullness”, I was able to drop 25 lbs in 6 months, while still eating the foods I enjoyed. No restrictions — just moderation.

However, when Christmas came along that year {2005}, I made exceptions and ended up gaining some of the weight I’d lost, back. This caused me to mentally kick myself, eat more, and gain more. That cycle just continued on, until eventually I’d put back on all the weight I’d lost, plus a bunch more.

Some of the things I’ve learned through that experience, and the subsequent years, are:

  1. YOUR MINDSET NEEDS TO CHANGE, FIRST. You need to have a firm “why” in place (as I mentioned above), and you need to get rid of negative thinking. Start with believing in yourself, and your ability to succeed.
  2. NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS. As soon as you start making excuses & exceptions to your plan, you’re bound to fail. This doesn’t mean you have to be rigid about things. Be flexible about your methods, but stubborn about your goals (as the saying goes).
  3. GOD WANTS TO HELP YOU SUCCEED! As stated above, it’s the devil who tries to steal from us, and “destroy” our ability to truly LIVE. God, on the other hand, sent Jesus to give us ABUNDANT LIFE… Life to the fullest! My favorite quote (by Hunter S. Thompson) says:

quote | Life, Unleashed

Surrendering to the Holy Spirit gives us access to His power — and that means, we don’t have to try and get healthy in our own strength (which never works, in the long run, anyway). Some verses to help back this up:

2 Timothy 1:7 – “For, God has not given us  a Spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Zechariah 4:6 – “‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord.”

Philippians 2:13 – “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

2 Peter 1:3 – “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life, through our knowledge of Him who called us...”

Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

4. ARM YOURSELF WITH SCRIPTURE, & FOCUS ON GOD. I have found it super-helpful to make sure I’m putting God FIRST in my life and goals, and one way I do this is to have a bunch of Scriptures memorized that I can use to combat any lies the devil tries to throw at me. In addition to the ones above, I also like these:

1 Peter 5:8 – “Stay alert & pray! For your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

2 Chronicles 26:5b – “As long as the king sought guidance from the Lord, God gave him success.

Ephesians 5:5b – “For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Ezekiel 16:49 – “Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor & needy suffered outside her door.

Philippians 3:19 – “They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

Titus 2:12 – “And, we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.
